The beginning of the school year brings the excitement of meeting new faces,
planning lessons, and creating activities to spark students’ imaginations. Students anxiously await meeting their teachers and finding out who will be in their classroom.
Eating does more than just sustain and nourish. It introduces us to a whole new world of learning. One of the most effective ways to enhance the student experience in a second language classroom is with the integration of food education.
Food brings people together. It nourishes and connects the community. And as a child in an immersion program, I discovered how food can play an important role even in language learning.
When I was young, learning French didn’t come easy to me. I would feel a tightness in my chest and stress in the pit of my stomach. Today, I use yoga to help me process my anxiety, and I use it in my classroom, too. When I’m teaching French to my immersion students, yoga helps them slow down and melt away their nervous energy, which gives them a confidence boost and prepares them for the challenging task of learning another language.

Two years after the introduction of the new Teaching Quality Standard in Alberta, Indigenous and non-Indigenous researchers from eight teacher education programs came together to examine how teachers were weaving Indigenous knowledges into their classrooms.
