Little Chewz author Lisa Trout didn't set out to be an author, a teacher or a health coach. As the youngest of 7 children, some authors and some teachers, she wanted to carve out her own path.
While pursuing a Sociology degree, she had the chance to take a child Psychology class where she was presented with opportunities to write children's books. She was in heaven. This led her to take formal book writing courses.
Her dream was to work for the United Nations and travel the world. Before children, she had many opportunities to travel. She was a flight attendant and she worked as an English language teacher in Thailand. After this experience, she caught the teaching bug.
This began a 17 year journey of teaching French immersion in Alberta, Canada. After her children were born, she discovered the importance food played in education and learning. This began a journey to becoming a certified health coach.
She created the Little Chewz family as a way to bring real world food learning into the classroom and at home. Over the years, she realized that it wasn't just food that brought people together. It was environmental education, yoga and mindfulness and parties too! This inspired her to publish the book "Chatter Box: Tools to Quiet your Mind" as a way to explore her anxiety and discover tools to support our students and teachers.
Lisa is currently taking her M.Ed at the University of Calgary and working on a project titled: "The Calgary Food Storytelling initiative". This project will bring food into the classroom and build intergenerational connections and language skills through storytelling. Lisa is very excited to continue to collaborate with The Tamamack Institute on this very important initiative. She will be publishing her first cookbook, "The Art of Grandma" to further this initiative. This upcoming year she will be focusing on Mental Health and Wellbeing in Schools: Social Justice in Practice.
We welcome you to the Little Chewz family. We are so happy you are here.
